There are several forms of vitamin C available for supplementation, each with their own properties, stability and applications:
- Ascorbic acid
The most well-known and pure form of vitamin C.
Advantages: High concentration, powerful antioxidant
Disadvantage: Low pH, which can be stressful for animals with sensitive stomachs
Application: In powders and gummies, or for short-term use.
- Calcium ascorbate
A buffered form, less acidic and more tolerable.
Benefits: Gentle on the stomach, suitable for sensitive animals.
Application: In chewable tablets, chews, and powders for dogs or cats.
- Sodium ascorbate
A highly soluble and gentle variant, particularly useful in liquid form.
Advantages: Suitable for liquids and combines well with other ingredients.
Application: Immunity liquids or recovery formulas for dogs and horses.
- Stabilized vitamin C (such as ascorbyl monophosphate)
More heat-stable, making it ideal for use in extruded feed or pet food.
Advantages: High stability, even during processing
Application: In kibble, snacks, or pet food with a functional character.
