Vitamin K in animal supplements: essential for blood clotting, bone health and more

Although often less discussed than other vitamins, vitamin K plays a crucial role in animal health in animal supplements. Besides its well-known role in blood clotting, this fat-soluble vitamin is also involved in bone formation, calcium regulation, and cell metabolism. Vitamin K is increasingly appearing in animal supplements, both as a corrective supplement for nutritional deficiencies and in formulations for bones, teeth, senior animals, or post-surgical recovery.

What forms of vitamin K are there?

Vitamin K comes in several forms:

  • Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone)
Plant origin; found in green leafy vegetables

  • Vitamin K2 (menaquinones, especially MK-7 and MK-4)
Produced by bacteria; important for bone and vascular health

  • Vitamin K3 (menadione)
Synthetic form often used in animal feed, usually as menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB)

For supplement development, K1 and K2 are particularly interesting in premium formulas, while K3 is widely used in basic feeds (especially in poultry, pigs and ruminants).

When is vitamin K in animal supplements indicated?

  • Blood clotting
Vitamin K in animal supplements is essential for the synthesis of clotting factors in the liver. Deficiencies can increase the risk of spontaneous bleeding.

  • Bone health and calcium metabolism
Vitamin K2, in particular, supports the activation of osteocalcin, a protein that helps bind calcium in bone tissue. Combined with vitamin D3, it strengthens the mineralization of bones and teeth.

  • Supplementation with long-term antibiotic use
Antibiotics can disrupt intestinal flora, which affects endogenous vitamin K2 production.

  • In case of poisoning (e.g., rat poison/anticoagulants)
In acute medical settings, vitamin K1 is used therapeutically in animals that have accidentally ingested anticoagulants.

Forms of vitamin K processing in animal supplements

At Nutriliq we process vitamin K in different types:

  • Liquids
Instable emulsions (e.g. K1 in fat-soluble matrices) or as part of bone formulas with calcium, D3 and magnesium

  • Soft chews or gummies
For dogs and cats – often in bone and joint formulas

  • Powders or pastes
For horses or farm animals; can be combined with other fat-soluble vitamins

  • Combination formulas
K2 + D3 is a popular combination for seniors or growing animals.

Points of interest

  • Dosage: Toxic overdose is rare with K1 and K2, but caution is required with K3. High doses can cause liver toxicity.

  • Synergy: preferably combine with vitamin D3, calcium and magnesium

  • Storage: Fat-soluble vitamins are sensitive to light and oxidation, good packaging is essential

  • Animal species: K3 use is not recommended in cats and minks due to increased sensitivity
