There are two biologically relevant forms of vitamin D:
1. Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol)
Vitamin D2 is produced by plants and fungi when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Although this form is useful in animal feed, it has a lower bioavailability in animals than vitamin D3.
2. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)
Vitamin D3 is mainly produced in the skin of animals under the influence of sunlight. It has a higher biological activity than D2 and is therefore more often used in animal feed supplements.
